As a full-time student, teacher and mom of four kids, Chavonne Henry has a lot on her plate. Her children have been treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado for everything from broken bones to a congenital heart defect, and all four of them have asthma. Yet Chavonne says she’s always felt supported.

My road to becoming a mother was not an easy one. Around Thanksgiving of 2016, we discovered (to our surprise and absolute delight!), we were pregnant. In March 2017, at our routine 20-week ultrasound, doctors discovered our baby (a boy!) had a heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. We left the appointment in a fog, not knowing what was ahead for our little boy and family.

Carter & Mom

In second grade, Carter was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of leukemia. Today, he’s cancer-free, and raises money for Children’s Colorado through his “Crafts for Cancer” project. Here, his mother Kelly writes a letter to her son about what she’s learned through his cancer battle.
