2019 Courage Classic Finish Line

Cycling event raises $50 million over 30 tours for Children’s Hospital Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (Sept. 26, 2019) — Children’s Hospital Colorado’s 30th Courage Classic Bicycle Tour, presented by Prologis, raised a record-setting $3.5 million to provide lifesaving care and support for the patients and families the hospital is honored to serve.

With nearly 2,000 riders and 100 teams, the Courage Classic Bicycle Tour held July 19-21, 2019, at Copper Mountain Resort, is the single largest gathering of people coming together to raise money for Children’s Colorado and patients like 8-year-old Owen.

Just days after he was born, Owen was diagnosed with four heart defects. He was flown from Vail to Children’s Colorado, where he had open-heart surgery at 6 days old, followed by another surgery at 9 months old. Owen’s story is not over; he will need at least one more open-heart surgery in his life. This is why Owen’s mom, Delfina, and his family, ride in the Courage Classic with the Cardiac Climbers team every year - to help other heart patients at Children’s Colorado and to make the impossible, possible. Over the course of multiple tours, the Cardiac Climbers team has raised more than $1.5 million to ensure that thousands of families – like Owen’s – receive the expert, lifesaving care they need.

“Every Courage Classic rider has a story about the impact that Children’s Colorado has had on their life,” said Jennifer Roe Darling, Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation president and CEO. “This event provides critical funds to the hospital, and we are grateful for the amazing support of our riders, volunteers, sponsors and donors. They make our mission possible one pedal, one mountain pass, one donation at a time.”

This year, nearly 250 medical staff and Children’s Colorado team members participated in the event. Courage Classic is supported by more than 400 community volunteers and nearly 50 generous sponsors.

This year’s top fundraising team was Wheels of Justice, with more than $525,000 raised by 240 riders, benefiting the Children’s Colorado Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Martha Reidel, a courageous Children’s Hospital Colorado cancer patient, raised more than $128,000, making her the top overall individual fundraising rider. Reidel has participated in the Courage Classic every year since 2015 when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma.

Other top fundraising teams included presenting sponsor, Prologis, Bison and Oil & Gas Friends, Cardiac Climbers, Summits for Samantha/Team Epsilon, and The Gene Team. Additional top individual fundraisers were Children’s Colorado Foundation Trustee Peter Culshaw, CEO and Co-Founder of Bison Oil & Gas John Austin Akers, Children’s Colorado Foundation staff member Anne Hanson, and Chief Medical and Patient Safety Officer Dr. Daniel Hyman.
