Campaign aims to spread hope to patients and families spending the holidays at the hospital
Aurora, Colo. (Nov. 1, 2017) – A giving spirit makes anything possible at Children’s Hospital Colorado and embodies the reason why Here, it’s different™. During this holiday season, the community can help bring hope to patients and families staying at Children’s Colorado through the Give Comfort & Joy community fundraising effort, Nov. 1 – Dec. 31, 2017.
“Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation’s Give Comfort & Joy effort is all about inspiring the community to come together during the holiday season to give back to an organization that touches so many families across the seven-state mountain region,” said Michele Murray, Director of Communications. By participating, community members can help a child who is spending the holidays in the hospital to receive the very best care and have a chance to experience the magic of the season.
The Give Comfort & Joy initiative will help kids like Caleb and Joseph.
Caleb was diagnosed in-utero with a diaphragmatic hernia, a defect of the diaphragm that severely impacts lung development and impairs breathing. Caleb was given a 4 percent chance of survival, but doctors performed surgery three days after he was born to repair the hernia. After being treated for more than one year in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Colorado, Caleb was able to go home. He had a tracheotomy and ventilator to be able to breathe. Today, Caleb breathes on his own and is an outgoing, energetic little boy who loves to sing and read.
Joseph has been treated at Children’s Colorado since he was a baby. An ultrasound revealed fluid in his bladder in-utero, a condition that doctors later determined was caused by Eagle-Barrett syndrome. Joseph was placed on kidney dialysis when he was 1 month old, and at age 3 he received a kidney transplant. Although he’s had a few rejection scares, Joseph is now a healthy 12-year-old who loves acting, country music and football.
Donations through Give Comfort & Joy have a direct impact on the lives of children:
- A gift of $45 can provide a family a meal during their hospital stay, leaving them one less thing to worry about.
- A gift of $100 offers families who have recently lost a child the opportunity to make a memory box or scrapbook through our Bereavement Program. This family activity can help provide comfort during the holidays.
- A gift of $205 can pay for an overnight stay for parents in our Family Resource Center. This special space provides reprieve and rest from a child’s hospital room for families who live far away from Children’s Colorado.
Community members can donate online or visit select Denver-area stores such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, Denver Biscuit Co., Kendra Scott, Modern Market, Panera Bread, Papa John’s Pizza, Pizzeria Locale, Royal Crest Dairy and Swoozies, who will all donate a portion of their sales to Children’s Colorado on participating days.
