The team at Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders helped Sophie beat cancer. In July 1999, Sophie was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma when she was 4 years old.
Sophie’s treatment consisted of intensive chemotherapy and other painful procedures. Now a cancer survivor at age 18, she has grown up to be an active and healthy high school senior, an official ambassador for the hospital and a volunteer at Children’s Colorado.
Your support matters
After her diagnosis, Sophie received treatment three times a week for about six months. For two years after her treatment ended, Sophie returned to the hospital for regular screenings of her heart, lungs and other critical body functions, until her doctors declared her cancer free.
Today, Sophie is cancer free and gives back
Sophie usually volunteers at the hospital one or two days a week during the summer. This past school year, while she served as an ambassador, Sophie started picking up additional volunteer shifts on the weekends.
“My favorite thing to do is be a float volunteer and have one-on-one interaction with the patients. It is a very relatable experience for me and I love having the ability to help kids just like me,” she said.
Her wish, to work with patients
“I hope to attend Tulane University in the fall and double major in public health and social work. This will give me the credentials to come back and work at Children’s Colorado as a Child Life Specialist,” she said. Child Life Specialists work in nearly every clinical setting of the hospital to help engage patients in their treatment and ease their anxiety.
“That would be my absolute dream.” Sophie said.
